AUSTIN, Texas -- The second ever Championship Gaming Series Combine completed earlier today here at the Screenburn Arcade in Austin, Texas.

Carolina Core (CS:S), Katherine "Mystik" Gunn (DOA-W), Wesley "Ch0mpr" Cwiklo (FM2), Carl "Perfect Legend" White (DOA-M), and Yfran "Eafra Garcia (FIFA) are your Combine victors.

In Counter-Strike: Source, Carolina Core picked up where they left off at the CGS World Final, maintaining their unbeaten run in official CGS play by taking out San Francisco Optx, Pandemic, and Guardians, three CEVO-P playoff teams.

?It?s a pretty big accomplishment,? said team captain Mark Torrez. ?I?ve been thinking for a while that our team has been the best in Counter-Strike: Source, and it was finally great to prove it.?

Carolina Core had another Combine winner, although shortly after her victory, she learned her spot on Core was no longer protected.

Mystik

DOA Women's tournament winner Katherine ?Mystik? Gunn.
Katherine ?Mystik? Gunn showed that her steady improvement throughout last season has continued as she won the tournament with only one single loss in the group stage.

?I feel great! It was awesome, it?s one of the first DoA tournaments I?ve ever won, and it?s very exciting,? she said about her win. While Carolina Core GM Mark Dolven chose not to protect her, Gunn isn?t worried at all about having a spot in the league again next season.

Of all the games at this event, Forza Motorsports 2 was probably the most unpredictable. Last year?s racers played PGR3, so it was hard to gauge just how well they?d take the transition to a different style game. Even the Forza 2 veterans had questions, since this is the first time they?ve ever clashed in a LAN environment.

In the end, though, a familiar face proved he still had the speed in the new racing digs: last year?s North American Season One MVP, Chicago Chimera?s Wesley ?Ch0mpr? Cwiklo, came out ahead of a close pack including hopefuls DarkStorm, Muffinman, and Dallas Venom speedster Kevin ?CHA0S? Parrish.

?Definitely a confidence booster,? smiled Ch0mpr, regarding the victory. ?I mean there was definitely a lot of doubt for the PGR3 players on whether or not they could adjust and keep up with Forza guys, but the showing today definitely proved we can hang with anyone.?

Of all the Combine tournaments, Dead or Alive Men's may have been the most contested. With talents like NinjaCW, Taikou, Rikuto, and Rabies mixed with last year?s CGS players, it was a tough tournament for anyone to win.

The heavy favorite, though, showed some perseverance as he came back from the loser?s bracket after an early upset loss to thrash NinjaCW in the finals, winning ten straight rounds for two 5-0 matches to take home the Combine title.

Carl ?Perfect Legend? White will certainly be a hot commodity come draft time tomorrow.

?Emotion... al? That?s all I can think,? he said, when asked how he felt about his epic win. ?As soon as I won the match, I went off the stage and started crying. That?s how like, intense, it was. I was really just angry from getting put into the loser?s bracket, people saying stuff about me, things that happened over the year, I was just fed up and I just poured it all into my game.?

Finally, in FIFA ?08 an unknown player went from zero to hero as he eked out victories all the way to the title.

The underdog that could was ?eafra,? and he stole the show with his stolid defense, shutting out every single opponent he played on his way to the championship. While he managed to score only one goal in regulation, which came against Optx?s Alessandro ?Stermy? Avallone, he pulled out wins in penalty kicks against stars like LA CompLexity?s Felipe ?Kreegan? Stoyne.

While only four players and one team won each tournament, many more showed off their skill to the six GMs who will decide the players? fates tomorrow at the draft.
